FAQs

At Oi we pride ourselves on giving you all the information you need to make informed choices about what you put into your body.

Who can use Oi’s period products?

Oi feminine hygiene products are for people who get periods. Not everyone who gets a period is a woman, and not every woman gets a period. Most girls and women will menstruate, with the average age for menstruation being 12.5 years old, and menopause occurring between 45 and 55 years old, resulting in periods stopping. Our bodies are all unique and when we start and finish our periods varies. For example, many girls get their period much younger than 12 years old. Transgender men, non-binary and gender-queer individuals also get periods. All people with periods have the chance to make a difference by choosing period products which are good for their health and better for the environment.

What are Oi tampons and products made from?

Oi tampons, pads and liners are made from certified organic cotton - free from chlorine, synthetics such as rayon and polypropylene, chemicals, dyes, fragrances, and lubricants.

What are most pads, liners and tampons made from?

Most menstrual pads, liners and tampons contain synthetics.

These are made up of plastics such as polythene, polypropylene and polyacrylate super absorbent gel, surfactants and chlorine-bleached wood pulp - as well as fragrance and colours.

Does Oi use chlorine bleaching?

No we don’t.  Most tampons are commonly made from chlorine bleached rayon or a combination of conventionally grown cotton, one the most highly sprayed crops on earth and rayon.

Chlorine bleaching practises produce dioxin as a by-product - a substance linked to health issues such as cancer, endometriosis and immune system compromise.

By choosing Oi you are saying No to the use of synthetics and chemicals in your tampons and pads.

Why is organic cotton better than normal cotton?

Normal cotton is grown using herbicide and pesticide sprays which leave potentially harmful residue. What do these toxins do to the most sensitive and absorbent part of our bodies?

A woman will use 11,000 or more tampons and pads in her lifetime, yet there is very little research on the impact of conventional tampon and pad ingredients on women’s bodies. Many women experience vaginal itching, irritation, soreness and discharge. Many gynaecologists recommend 100% certified organic cotton tampons and pads to their patients.

Are all tampons, pads and liners biodegradable?

Sadly most aren’t and are estimated to take up to can take up to 500 years to biodegrade. Conventional pads and panty liners are made from synthetic materials, in other words up to 90% crude oil plastics and therefore are not compostable or biodegradable. With one pad estimated to = 4 plastic bags.

Certified organic cotton is a natural product and biodegradable and compostable in the right conditions in 18 – 24 months.

Where is the Oi cotton sourced from?

Our cotton comes from a range of GOTS (Global Organic Textiles Standard) certified farms including the USA, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Turkey.

What is Oi’s packaging made of?

Oi boxes are recyclable, and our inks are made from vegetable and plant based dyes.

Pads and liners wrappers are made with biodegradable cornstarch. Our most environmentally friendly tampon is the cardboard applicator tampon, individually wrapped in paper. The digital tampons are currently individually wrapped in recyclable polypropylene. In the cases where technology is not there yet, we may take to market our certified organic cotton products, in the best available packaging.
